The relationship of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to new-onset diabetes: a review
Roderick C Deano, Henry A Tran & Peter M OkinDiabetes is an increasingly prevalent disease that has a well-known association with cardiovascular risk, a risk that may even exist in prediabetics. Lower levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) have been associated with increased risk of incident cardiovascular events. Recent prospective studies have shown a potential temporal association between lower levels of HDL-C and development of incident Type 2 diabetes. This article will review the recent studies detailing potential causative association between low levels of HDL-C and incident Type 2 diabetes, examine the potential pathophysiology and mechanisms of such an association, and review associated treatment implications.
